Does Shang Chi have powers? Marvel fans are all asking the same question as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings nears its 3 September release date.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, what’s it about?

The movie is the 25th in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and features the story of the titular character Shang Chi, played by Asian-Canadian actor Simu Liu.

Who is Shang Chi? Does he have powers?

Being a superhero movie, you’d assume Shang Chi has some super powers.

But first of all, let’s clear up who exactly Shang Chi is. The character was created by writer Steve Englehart and artist Jim Starlin and first appeared in Special Marvel Edition #15 in December 1973.

According to Games Radar, Chi was inspired by Kwai Chang Caine from the 70s TV show Kung Fu – which Marvel previously looked into licensing.

As his popularity continued to grow, Shang Chi starred in a solo title starting in 1983.

His main powers actually manifest as proficiency in the wushu style of Chinese martial arts.

This is because he is actually mortal, despite beating several superhuman opponents in the Marvel Universe.

There have also been occasions when Chi had enhanced abilities. Using Pym Particles, a magic potion in the MCU, Shang Chi managed to enhance his size and defeated a dragon in combat.

However, all of Chi’s usual abilities are purely mortal – despite being wildly impressive. But one look at the teaser-trailer released today may show that could be about to change, with Chi seen catching knives flying at him, jumping ludacrously high into the air and generally displaying super human strangth.

To surmise, Chi generally doesn’t have superpowers per se, but that could be about to change.
