Vampire movie The Lost Boys has earned cult classic status thanks to its incredible take on the horror genre. Released on this day (July 31) in 1987 and starring Kiefer Sutherland and the Two Coreys, it’s a must-have in any horror collection.

But off-screen the cast has been plagued by a lot of tragedy, including untimely death, drug addiction and broken hearts.

The number of tragic events to befall the stars has caused many to wonder if the film was cursed.

Let’s take a look at some of the difficulties the actors have dealt with…

Kiefer Sutherland

Sutherland, who played vampire David, started dating actress Julia Roberts three years after the movie’s release in 1990 when they met on the set of Flatliners.

They became engaged in August of that year and were due to get married on June 14, 1991, but they didn’t get their happy ending.

Julia called the wedding off with just three days to go amid allegations that Kiefer had been meeting a go-go dancer, although he denied he was having an affair.

On the day the wedding should have taken place, Julia traveled to Ireland with Kiefer’s Lost Boys co-star Jason Patric and they dated for a while.

The star has also had some legal troubles, even spending 48 days in jail after pleading no contest to a drink driving charge when he was arrested in Los Angeles and failed a sobriety test in 2007.

Jason Patric

As well as running off with Roberts on the day of her canceled wedding to Sutherland, Patric, who played Michael, faced a tough custody battle with his on/off partner Danielle Schrieber.

They were together for 10 years and conceived a son together through in vitro fertilization.

When they split for good in May 2012, Danielle’s attorneys argued that under California law, Patric was a sperm donor and that he had no custody rights to his son because he was conceived through artificial means and because Patric and Danielle were never married.

He fought to change the law and sued for parental rights to his son but lost the case at trial court level.

He went back to court with Danielle in 2014 and prevailed that time, but sadly, he lost two years as being legally recognized as the father of his son.

Corey Haim

One half of the Two Coreys alongside pal Corey Feldman, Haim tragically died from pneumonia in 2010, when he was just 38 years old.

He’d been found at the home he shared with his mother surrounded by prescription drugs, leading police to originally believe he’d suffered an overdose.

The star, who played Sam in the film, had been plagued by drug problems since a very young age, and once declared he smoked marijuana for the first time at the age of 16, while he was filming The Lost Boys.

Things progressed when he moved to LA and developed a cocaine habit before moving on to crack just over a year later.

He first went to rehab when he was just 18 and was in and out of facilities around 15 times before his death.

Brooke McCarter

Brooke, who played vampire Paul, was 52 when he died on December 22, 2015.

His family announced that he’d succumbed to a liver condition, saying in a statement: “The McCarter family is heartbroken to share the news that Brooke McCarter passed away December 22, 2015 from the genetic liver condition alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency (AAT).

“He was 52. Brooke was our loving son, brother, father, cousin, nephew and friend.”
