Bradley Cooper managed to outsmart Lady Gaga during her audition for A Star Is Born when she was asked to turn up without makeup on.

Lady Gaga plays the role of Ally in the 2018 film a Star Is Born. It follows a country music star (Bradley Cooper) who discovers a talented unknown artist (Stefani Germanotta).

Gaga had already proved her acting skills in programs such as American Horror Story. However, before being cast in A Star Is Born, Gaga decided to trick Cooper into thinking she was au natural…

Lady Gaga was asked to attend the A Star Is Born audition screen test without any makeup on because her character Ally is not the type to wear a full face of glam. When it came around to the audition, Gaga insisted she wasn’t wearing an ounce of makeup. However, she had done what many girls do, secretly a “no makeup” makeup look.

Bradley Cooper has been in the game for a long time and was accustomed to the makeup trick. He took it upon himself to pick up a makeup wipe and rub it on her face to check she was telling the truth. He then asked Gaga to remove it all, stating “take it off”. Cooper, who was the producer, and director of the film, told a bare-faced Gaga that she is now “Completely open. No artifice.”

Gaga and Cooper told the tale on The Graham Norton Show in the UK where she explains that she wanted to have a bit of makeup on “but Bradley wouldn’t go for it.” Cooper then defended himself saying, “It’s how the character is.” Gaga’s character is an unknown singer-songwriter who gives up on her dreams of making it in the music industry. In the film, it is also clear that she is insecure about her appearance as she becomes plagued with self-doubt.

Gaga loved ditching the makeup in the end

Thankfully, Lady Gaga was on board with ditching the makeup as it helped her get into the role easily.

She said: “It put me right in the place I needed to be, because when my character talks about how ugly she feels — that was real. I’m so insecure. I like to preach, but I don’t always practice what I preach,” she told LA Times.

Gaga has also opened up about her use of makeup to transform her appearance. She used it a lot at the start of her career when she was in doubt about her own attractiveness as per The Daily Mail. Lady Gaga is known for her eccentric outfits and makeup looks, but her Star is Born character is completely the same.

This is actually the fourth time that A Star Is Born has been released as a Hollywood film. The first movie was made in 1951 starring Kathleen Crowley and Conrad Nagel, in 1954 we saw Judy Garland and James Mason take on the lead roles.

Interestingly, in this version, there is a scene where Judy Garland’s co-star James Mason removes her makeup. Then, in 1976 Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson played the leads. Each of the films differ in their own ways but they have all been critically acclaimed in their own rights.

Lady Gaga’s tragic personal ending to A Star Is Born

Lady Gaga sadly had a hard time towards the end of filming as her best friend Sonja Durham was dying of cancer. Durham, who was the managing director of Haus of Gaga, battled stage four breast, brain and lung cancer.

It was particularly hard for her to perform the last song in A Star Is Born, “I’ll Never Love Again” after finding out the tragic news that Sonja had sadly passed away. She opened up about the tragic day to Entertainment Weekly.

The Born This Way singer said: “We were supposed to shoot in, like, 30 minutes, and I left the set because her husband called me and I could hear her in the background and I just got in the car and drove.”

Gaga reveals: “I missed her by 15 minutes and she died. I literally laid with her, with her husband, and their dog, and his son…. When I came back, Bradley was so gentle with me and we got through it.”

She continued, “I performed the song. He was like, ‘You don’t have to do it again. It’s okay.’ All I wanted to do was sing. I’ll never forget that day. It was really a special scene, and I’ll always remember that moment.”

Gaga shares heartfelt tribute to late best friend

In a heartfelt post, Gaga shared a tribute to her best friend. She posted: “I don’t know how to put a price on a friendship. I’m not even sure how you can assess the size of its meaning, only really your heart truly knows and it’s too special for words.”

Gaga wrote, alongside a photos dump of Durham.

She added: “I feel two competing feelings. Firstly, that I will live everyday with more passion, more determination, more compassion and more giving than ever before. Because that’s who she was, and it’s what drew us to each other, and I know it’s what she always wanted for me.”
