Tom Hanks’ son, Chet Hanks (known for roles in Empire and Shameless), has made headlines recently, reminding Twitter of the almost existence of Forrest Gump 2, and renewing calls for a Forrest Gump sequel starring Chet Hanks. Are they making Forrest Gump 2?
Are they making a Forrest Gump 2?
Forrest Gump author Winston Groom penned the sequel, Gump and Co. (or Forrest Gump and Co.) in 1995, nine years after the publication of Forrest Gump.
Plans to make a sequel to the indomitable 1994 classic film Forrest Gump were scuppered by unforeseen events.
Screenwriter Eric Roth was served up a box of “you never know what you’re gonna get” when, on 10 September, 2001 he turned in his script for Gump & Co., aka Forrest Gump 2.
What happened to it?
The very next day, as we all know, the events of 9/11 occurred. In Roth’s words, there and then, the screenplay lost its meaning.
Roth’s sequel would have seen Forrest dance with Princess Diana, become involved with O.J. Simpson’s infamous 1994 car chase, and witness the bombing of the Alfred P Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, in 1995.
But after 9/11, it all felt redundant.
“This movie has no meaning anymore,” Roth told Yahoo Entertainment.
Is 2021 the year for a Forrest Gump sequel?
Guardian journalist Stuart Heritage wrote in 2019 that Forrest Gump 2 might just be a sequel “berserk enough to suit our hellish times”.
Roth’s screenplay, much like the first film, was a rollercoaster ride through a few years of real life events – in the 1990s.
Given the various dramatic turns of events of the last few years, Heritage argues, “the time is right for a Forrest Gump sequel”.
“We’re drowning in wildly inappropriate footage of real-life tragedies that no sensible person would ever think of shoehorning into a film. This is your wheelhouse.”
Is Tom Hanks’ son Chet Hanks the man for the job?
Twitter users have made their case for Chet Hanks to star as Gump Jr in Forrest Gump 2.
He is also a rapper and recording artist, releasing music under the name Chet Haze.
In a recent Instagram upload, Chet Hanks follows up his previous “White Boy Summer” video, including a dig at “salmon shorts”.
“Leave the salmon shorts at home,” he says.
Would Forrest Gump, or indeed Gump Jr (Haley Joel Osment, in the film), have worn salmon (or, er, shrimp-coloured) shorts?
