Your dog could get a job as a ‘chief toy tester’ and be paid $20,000
PetSmart is on the hunt for a dog and a cat to be its next chief toy tester which comes with a chunky pay package alongside the opportunity to test out the brand’s newest toys and treats.
Each year, PetSmart reviews countless applications from eager pet owners in the hopes of selecting their next chief toy tester. Sadly, the competition is only open to dogs and cats and not the wide variety of other critters Americans like to keep as pets.

How your pet can become chief toy tester
In a press release on Tuesday, PetSmart announced the opening of the competition after last year’s winners, Whiskey and Loki, concluded their term in office.
Despite the name, the Chief toy tester role is not all fun and games. Four times a year, during each quarter, your dog or cat will receive a huge hamper of the latest toys, treats, costumes, and fun activities. Your pet is then required to post about their experiences with the freebie on social media.
Alongside the free merch and chunky pay packet of $10k per winning pet, chosen animals will also be featured in office PetSmart signage across the US stores. It’s worth mentioning that your $10k prize money is split into $2,500 each quarter.
“We have such a fun and exciting lineup of toys, apparel, and treats rolling out this year and we cannot wait to share them with our new Chief Toy Testers and all pet parents,” said James Elasky, SVP of merchandising and chief merchant at PetSmart. “Our wide assortment has something for every pet, play style, season, and price point to help pet parents create more moments of connection and joy, together.”
What are the requirements for the job?
As per the press release, there are a few mandated requirements to be accepted as the next chief toy tester at PetSmart.
- The willingness to test out new toys which may require lunging, running, jumping or puzzle solving.
- A nose for sniffing out the tastiest treats.
- The perfect pose and strut to go down the catwalk and show off the latest pet apparel and accessories.
- Human pet parents who can commit to a one-year partnership contract on their pet’s behalf, and the ability to create trendy social media content.
