A woman has gone viral on TikTok for sharing her predicament over changing her last name after getting married.

Woman’s last name predicament

“If you’re a girl with a really cool last name, what are you doing in this situation?” she said on TikTok, asking for advice.

Hailey is engaged and her fianc’s last name is Peters, but her maiden name is just so iconic that she doesn’t know if she wants to take his name.

“Don’t get me wrong I’m very proud to become Mrs Peters, I love him very much, but I’m having such a hard time letting go of my last name,” she explained.

It’s been such a conversation starter since she was born, for obvious reasons, although she isn’t actually related to the Mickey Mouse founder. The surname was passed down through generations and she feels very “attached” to it, so is stuck in a serious predicament.

She doesn’t want to hyphenate it to Disney-Peters but also isn’t keen on giving the name up – so what should she do?

‘He should take Disney’

In the comments everyone is in agreement that there is only one answer, her husband takes the surname Disney. Duh!

“He should take Disney, that’s an insane last name,” one person said.

Another agreed: “Why isn’t the norm to just take the cooler last name?”

“Don’t you DARE sacrifice Disney for Peters,” a third added.

Someone else said: “Why can’t he be Mr Disney?”

Why women take their husband’s name

Women taking their husband’s name after marriage dates back to the Middle Ages when the population began increasing, UK Deed Poll Office explains. Laws started being introduced to make things more organized, but it was a male-dominated society.

Women had no identity of their own and were seen as merely an extension of their husbands, unable to make money, own property, or make any legal decisions on their own. Upon marriage, women would take their husbands’ last name to show that they legally belonged to them.

In today’s society, this view is completely outdated and women now have their own identity and rights, but the tradition of taking your husband’s surname still remains. This is usually as a symbol of commitment or to have the same surname as your children.

However, there is no legal reason why you have to take your husband’s surname after marriage, and it’s completely fine to not change it at all or for the husband to take the wife’s maiden name. So, there’s no reason why he couldn’t be Mr. Disney. It’s a no-brainer!
