Woman calls out ‘very American thing’ her ex did that’s frowned upon in Europe
Cultural shock while dating people from different parts of the world is a given. One woman shares a very American thing her ex did that would tick Europeans off.
People from America hold a reputation for doing things a tad differently. The way they store their milk and boil water is only two of the many things foreigners find bizarre. Here’s one more to add to the list.

European woman’s experience dating American man
Several women have seconded a TikTok user’s opinion about a common practice common among Americans.
The TikTok user who goes by the handle Living the Life is originally from Europe. She dated an American man with whom she lived for two years, during which she noticed he wouldn’t take his shoes off at home – a very American thing.
Even if the questionable habit isn’t common among the entire population, the majority of people from American countries prefer wearing their shoes inside the house as well.
However, the TikTok user argues it’s highly unhygienic, considering everything the footwear is exposed to when worn outside the house.

She says she and her ex-boyfriend often got into arguments over him keeping the same shoes on at home, after walking around public spaces covered in dog pee and poop or using public washrooms.
“It was my mission to teach this guy to take his damn shoes off when he comes home,” she says before presenting his argument that “all Americans wear shoes in the house and it’s normal,” while blaming her for overreacting.
The TikTok user supported her argument saying she disliked the fact that she would step on all the filth her ex’s shoes brought into the house when she would go to the kitchen or walk around the house barefoot at night.
Her frustration resonates with most
A poll conducted by CBS News last year found that nearly two in three Americans take their shoes off at home, while they don’t expect their guests to adhere to it.
The American man discussed in the video falls in the 37% of the population that isn’t “shoe-off people” it seems.
Therefore, fellow users in the comments, regardless of whether they are Americans or not, believe it’s a safer practice to keep your footwear outside the house.
When one commented: “My husband does this and it makes me CRAZY”, another added: “Wearing shoes at home is gross.”
Another user elsewhere commented: “Here in New Zealand its totally frowned upon if you wear shoes in the house. Big NO.”
