Why it pays to be the first baby born in 2024

It can often pay rather lucratively to be the very first arrival when we head into a new year.

While most people will be out celebrating as we usher in the year 2024, some people will be sitting at home or waiting in hospital, as they prepare to welcome new life to the world. Though most people would generally associate January 1 as being a rather unfortunate time to celebrate your birthday, not everybody knows that it often pays to be the first baby born in a new year, and why 2024 should be no different.

Why it pays to be the first baby born in 2024

For the countless hardworking members of hospital and ambulance staff who will spend their NYE keeping people safe, a newborn is often a welcome addition to a hectic festive shift.

Every year the local press from around the world, whether it be in New York or Nepal, Dundee or Denmark, will keep readers abreast of the first baby to be born in that area that year – such as Baby Lando, who was the first new arrival in York, England, back at the start of 2023.

Not only do start-of-year arrivals make for wholesome reading, but sometimes being the first baby of the year can be a rather astute financial move, too.

From lifetime diaper supplies to cash sums, it can pay to be the first born baby – and there have been some rather interesting examples of such fortunes in the past.

The luckiest first babies of the year

During the 20th century, the US made quite a big deal of its first babies of the year.

According to reports, New Year babies were often flaunted on the front of magazines, and in the 60s and 70s parents were often greeted with handy gifts like bedding, toiletries and even meal tokens for local restaurants.

Though in recent years babies have been less publicized to protect their anonymity, prizes for the first-born babies do still exist.

Back in 2007, Toys R Us made headlines when the manufacturing giants announced a sweepstake, taking bets on where and when the first baby of the year would be born – with three families with newborns being awarded a cash prize of $25,000.

Companies like Diapers.com have also used the New Year baby phenomenon as a promotional tool, offering freebies to those who give birth during the holidays.

While your mind will undoubtedly be in other places if you or your partner is giving birth over New Year’s Eve 2023/2024, keep the faith, as missing the traditional celebrations will undoubtedly be worth it.
