Why is there a green line around Snapchat stories?

Snapchat users confused by a green line that has suddenly appeared on stories have taken to other platforms to ask one another about the new update in 2024. The change led to some users thinking their phone screens were broken.

Why is there a green line around Snapchat stories?

The L-shaped green line around Snapchat stories indicates the update was posted within the last 24 hours. “When you see the green line, it means there’s fresh and exciting content waiting for you to check out,” notes the Snapchat AI bot.

While Snapchat stories typically last for 24 hours, Snapchat+ subscribers can choose when they want their stories to expire. So, the green line is an indicator that a certain story is recent.

The L line next to a Snapchat story is called a “lime frame” and it’s a visual indicator of the timeline of the post.

At the time of writing, there’s no way to change the color of the indicator, and users can’t get rid of it either by making any changes to their device or updating Snapchat.

New update confuses users

Snapchat users couldn’t make sense of the sudden appearance of the green line around stories, especially as it wouldn’t disappear even after they viewed the post. At first, many thought the green line was caused by a broken phone screen.

“Thought it was just me with that green line border thingy on Snapchat, makes me feel itchy,” wrote one user.

Another wrote: “I thought my phone screen was broken. This is so irritating.”

“Why’s everyone’s snaps on Snapchat got a green line down the side,” asked another.

“Snapchat better fix this green line rubbish,” wrote one user who isn’t pleased with the feature.

The new L-shaped line is the latest addition to Snapchat indicators.

For instance, if you see a fire emoji next to someone’s name, it means they have a Snapstreak with you; it indicates how many consecutive days you’ve exchanged snaps. The yellow heart emoji, on the other hand, indicates that you and the other user are best friends on Snapchat.
