Why having a deeper voice makes you more attractive to females
Scientists say that if you are looking for a relationship, you should lower the pitch of your voice to make it sound deeper but why?
Pitch is one of the most noticeable aspects of your voice, yet there are some types of voices that tend to be deemed as more attractive to men and women. This week, scientists shared how having deeper voices can change your social or relationship status and surprise, it mostly comes down to sex-based competition.

Its true: Deeper voices do tend to be more attractive
According to scientists from Pennsylvania State University, deeper voices (lower-pitched voices) really do make men and women sound more attractive for potential long-term partners.
Younger men also find deeper voices make an individual sound more “formidable” and intimidating, whilst older men tended to perceive deeper voices as more “prestigious” and respected.
The team also found that men perceived higher-pitched females as more attractive for short-term relationships and that women in turn perceive higher pitches to be more flirtatious.
David Puts, a Professor of Anthropology at Pennsylvania State University, explained how this is likely because men have sex traits such as upper body muscle mass that look like they were shaped by male use of force or threat of force to win mating opportunities.
A low voice pitch exaggerates size. It makes an organism, whether it’s a person or non-human primate, seem big and intimidating.”
Puts shares that these findings indicate that deeper voices evolved because our male ancestors frequently interacted with competitors who were strangers, where being more attractive meant better chances to pass on your genes to the next generation.

To put it in laymans terms, deeper voices make you seem bigger and more intimidating than you might be, and this has evolved over millions of years of sexual competition where the bigger and more intimidating men tended to get more partners.
These results come from an enormous cross-cultural study that has recently been published in the Journal of Psychological Science, in which over 3000 participants from five continents were surveyed about how they perceive voice pitches in complete strangers.
Interestingly, the researchers also suggest that the same could be said for another commonly attractive feature – beards.
“Male traits such as deep voices and beards are highly socially salient, but this new research shows that the salience of at least one of these traits varies in predictable ways across societies, and it suggests that others, such as beards, do too.”
As Puts poignantly concludes, In a society where there’s higher relational mobility and you have less direct information about your competitors, people appear to be more attentive to an easily identifiable, recognizable signal like voice pitch.”

So, if you want to gain a long-term relationship as a man; whether it be romantic or professional, you should try lowering the pitch of your voice. For women, higher-pitched voices might get you ‘lucky’ more often, but slightly lowering your pitch might be the answer to a long-term love life.
