Last week one lucky player in Illinois became a billionaire after winning the Mega Millions jackpot of $1.337 billion. While the win has made headlines as it was one of the top scoops in the history of the lottery, the identity of the winner has stayed under wraps.

Who was the last mega millions jackpot winner?
While the Mega Millions lottery receives renewed attention following the recent billion-dollar jackpot, who were the last jackpot winners and when were the top prizes won?
As per the Mega Millions website, the last jackpot win before July’s whopping total was in April.
At the time, a total of $20 million was won in Tennessee. It was claimed by a trust that has remained anonymous.
April also saw another jackpot win as a Minnesota couple bagged $110 million.
In a press release following their win the couple kept their identity private. However, they did reveal their immediate plans for their newfound fortune would be to buy a house, car and travel.
How many Mega Million Jackpot winners have there been?
The Mega Millions lottery has been around since 2002, making 20 years of winners.
During the past two decades, there have been a total of 203 jackpot wins, five of them have happened this year.
The first win of 2022 was in January when a woman named Kristine Wellenstein won a total of $426 million.
The second win of the year was two months later in March, with April seeing two more wins before the recent $1.3 billion win at the end of July.
Has anyone ever won more than a billion before?
The recent $1.337 billion Mega Millions jackpot is actually the second largest prize won in the lottery’s history. There have been three winners overall who have scooped jackpots of more than a billion.
The highest total win was a whopping $1.537 billion, which was bagged almost four years ago in 2018 by an anonymous player in South Carolina. While the total was won in late 2018, it wasn’t claimed until five months later, in March 2019.
In January 2021, a jackpot total of $1.05 billion was also claimed in Michigan as it became the biggest lottery win in the state. The prize was claimed by the Oakland County lottery club Wolverine FLL Club where it was split between four lucky winners.
