What does ‘Band for Band’ mean?

‘Band for band is a phrase people use on TikTok to compare something with another person and see who comes out on top. It’s essentially a way to challenge one another and see who is better, and it can be used in many different contexts.

For example, one trend is taking over the app that sees people saying “let’s go band to band” while rubbing their eyebrows. They are comparing who has the thickest, fullest brows and seeing if others can beat them.

Another video sees a girl doing the same thing with her lips, challenging other internet users to see whose lips are plumper. So, the term could be used for anything from body parts to cars or even properties.

Original meaning of the phrase

However, the term ‘band for band’ originally had a completely different meaning online relating to money. As explained by Urban Dictionary, the phrase means “showing off your money in bands, i.e. $1,000 denominations”.

According to people on TikTok, going band for band involves seeing who has the most money by putting down $1,000 at a time. For example, one person puts down $1,000, then the next person does $2,000, followed by $3,000 and so on.

This continues until one person runs out of cash, meaning the other person is the winner and declared the richest.
