‘Weirdest’ coffee order mixes espresso with popular breakfast drink

A barista has gone viral on TikTok after explaining one of the weirdest coffee orders he has received, and it’s pretty strange.

The bizarre concoction combines two popular breakfast drinks and is loved by many, but it’s certainly not for everyone.

‘Weirdest’ coffee order

In the video, a woman goes into a coffee shop in Rhode Island called The Nitro Bar and asks the barista: “What’s the weirdest drink order you’ve gotten recently?”

“An Americano Sunrise,” he replies, before explaining that’s an “Americano made with orange juice instead of water”.

Yes, you heard that right. Someone actually wanted a hot shot of espresso poured into an iced cup of orange juice.

They then proceeded to make the iced beverage, which looks pretty cool as the hot brown coffee swirls into the orange liquid.

However, the barista said the order was “obscene” – and the interviewer wasn’t a fan of the strange taste.

TikTok users love the combo

People on TikTok are surprisingly all for the idea, with one person writing: “Vitamin C + caffeine? Sign me up.”

“I’m weirdly drawn to it and I don’t know how to feel,” said another.

A third person added: “I do this and love it to death.”

“This is one of my favorite drinks in the world,” someone else wrote.

Another agreed: “Espresso with orange juice is actually tasty.”

In the comments, baristas are confirming that people do actually order that, although no one actually calls it an Americano Sunrise.

It’s known as a Bumblebee Coffee in most places as the two colors merged together look like the yellow and brown insect.

The combination is popular in many areas of the world, from Ukraine to Thailand – so it’s not actually as weird as it seems.

Could have negative effects

However, you need to be careful when drinking espresso and orange juice together as the acidity could give you an unwanted stomach ache.

“Both orange juice and coffee are highly acidic foods,” dietitian Christina Manian told Well+Good. “Coffee can also stimulate the production of stomach acid, all of which may result in acid reflux, or heartburn symptoms.”

She said that the combination can also stop the body from absorbing some nutrients, explaining: “The tannins found in coffee can block some of the absorption of vitamin C found in orange juice, so if you’re looking for optimal absorption, I would give it an hour between drinking these beverages.”
