We fall in love 3 times in our lifetime

“Did you know that you’ll fall in love with three different people in your lifetime?” he said before explaining you have your first love, the hard one and your lifelong partner.

The first love typically happens at a young age and you eventually grow apart. The relationship probably ended over something silly.

“As you get older and you look back at this love, you may not think this was actually love, but the truth is it was love,” the TikTok user said.

The second love is difficult because you get hurt, but it’s there to teach you lessons and make you stronger as a person.

“This love includes great pain, betrayal, drama, damage, but this is the love where we grow. We learn what we love about love and what we don’t love.”

It also helps you learn the difference between good and bad people and ensures you’re more careful and cautious in the future.

Finally, there’s the third love which is your lifelong partner. You aren’t looking for this relationship and it comes blindly with no warning at all.

“You find yourself caring about this person so much without trying, and they’re not your usual type either, but you just get lost in their eyes.”

This is the person you want to spend the rest of your life with, the TikTok user said, and you see beauty in their imperfections.

Theory backed by relationship experts

This idea is widely referred to as the Three Loves Theory. It’s not clear who originally came up with it, but the three loves are backed by relationship experts.

Couple TherapistMelissa Ferrari told Today Extra that each relationship is a learning experience and makes you think: “Oh, gee, I did miss that red flag, maybe I’ll watch out for it next time.”

“To go through life and experience things and not be too shy about falling in love is probably a good start here, but it shapes us in a way of being able to recognise we are human, we tend to idealise our partner in the beginning,” she said.

Ferrari added that these relationships all “shape us in terms of where we decide to go, and the decisions that we make” and it’s all “important steps to maturity”.

However, she explained that the best part about the three loves is “not idealising [people] and realising in mature love that we are human, we are flawed, we think we’re way better at relationships than we actually are”.

If you’re currently in the third relationship, here’s one simple sign that you have found the one and will be with that person forever.
