Dermatologists’ ‘top tip’ for glowing skin

Dermatologist 1 – Start your day with a glass of warm water

The first skin expert, certified cosmetologist-aesthetician Valerie Aparovich from OnSkin told The Focus the best way to get glowing skin is to drink a glass of warm water every morning.

Start your day with a glass of plain warm water, she said. Regular morning water intake promotes a clearer, more polished and glowing complexion.

Hydrating first thing in the morning helps jumpstart the lymphatic system, maintain fluid levels, and support the body’s natural detoxification processes.

Dermatologist 2 – Take an antioxidant supplement

Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Rachel Nazarian said her top tip for a glowing complexion is taking an oral antioxidant supplement, which “improves skins defences against free-radical damage”.

“Environmental stressors, such as pollution, cigarette smoke and visible-light from cell phones, all contribute to skin aging and can dull the look of skin over time,” she explained.

They accelerate the loss of collagen and increase pigmentation unevenness leading to aged skin, but antioxidants help to improve protection against these environmental factors.

Dermatologist 3 – Use a hyaluronic acid

The third dermatologist, Dr. Ray Kleinfelder, said the key to glowing skin is to use a hyaluronic acid twice per day.

“Hyaluronic acid is a glycosaminoglycan naturally found in our skin. These molecules hold onto water,” he explained. “By adding additional hyaluronic acid, we can supplement our skin’s hydration, giving our skin a plump, glowy, dewy look.”

The skin expert recommends Vichy Mineral 89 and SkinCeuticals Hyaluronic Acid Intensifier, which not only add hyaluronic acid, but also stimulate our own body’s production of it.

Dermatologist 4 – Use a Vitamin C serum

Dr. Samuel Hetz, a medical doctor who specializes in aesthetic medicine and dermatology, told The Focus that applying Vitamin C once a day during your morning skincare routine is the biggest game-changer for glowing skin.

“It acts as a powerful antioxidant, protecting your skin from free radicals and environmental damage that can cause aging and dullness, as well as from sun damage,” he revealed.

Vitamin C brightens your complexion by reducing dark spots and evening out skin tone. It also boosts collagen production, which helps to smooth fine lines and wrinkles and strengthens the skin barrier, helping your skin retain moisture. This results in hydrated, plump, and radiant skin.

Dermatologist 5 – Regularly exfoliate your face

Finally, medical aesthetician and cosmetic practitioner Paul Charette said that regular exfoliation is his top tip for glowing skin.

“The outermost layer of our skin, called the stratum corneum, is composed of dead skin cells that can make the skin appear dull, rough, and can clog pores. Exfoliation helps to slough off these dead skin cells, revealing fresher, smoother skin underneath, he said.

This can be done through physical exfoliation, which involves physically scrubbing the skin using a gentle abrasive material, or chemical exfoliation, which uses chemical substances to dissolve the bonds between the dead skin cells, allowing them to be shed more easily.
