Water bottles can be full of bacteria, so here’s how to clean your Stanley Cup
Despite their huge popularity, a lot of people don’t know how to correctly clean their Stanley Cup to remove all bacteria.
Stanley is undeniably one of the most popular brands in America right now, with over 660k videos dedicated to them on TikTok alone. Though pricey, customers are thrilled with the quality of their products and just how functional they are in day-to-day life.
How much bacteria is in water bottles
Since Stanley shot to new heights of fame, their cups have become a massive talking point on platforms like Instagram and TikTok. But, while most of the attention is positive, there have been concerns over potential lead poisoning and the number of bacteria its insulated walls are harboring.
It doesnt matter if its a Stanely or a Stanely dupe, youre going to be disgusted, one person said on TikTok. Look at that mold, and thats not even the worst part. Look at this, absolutely disgusting.

Social media users shared similar issues, but some argued the build-up of grime is largely down to poor washing techniques. So if you’re hoping to rid your Stanley Cup of all bacteria, its about more than just swilling it out and removing the straw.
A study from WaterFilterGuru found that the average water bottle contained 20.8 million living microbes. In comparison, an average toilet seat hid just 515. They also found that straw-topped bottles contained fourteen times more bacteria than a pet bowl.
Dr Daniel R. Kuritzkes hit back at the study in conversation with the Daily Mail last year, telling the newspaper that such studies spark unnecessary worry.
A simple water or carbonated water, even flavored water that has no calories in it, is not going to be any significant risk to people because there’s just there’s to fuel the growth of harmful bacteria, he said. Just because bacteria is present, it doesn’t mean it is a risk – plenty of bacteria are harmless or can even be healthy.
Terms like bacteria tend to invoke a sense of danger, but in fact, we ingest upwards of a billion microbes every single day.
How to clean your Stanely Cup
Cleaning tips are a little like Stanely Cups in that there are countless varieties and your chosen one is largely down to personal preference. Nonetheless, TikTok had some thoughts.

Skylar (@skysayingthings) said the biggest part of a successful clean is taking each piece off the Stanley Cup. These could then be cleaned in traditional hot water and soap.
The platform’s resident cleaning guru @cleanthatup also emphasized the importance of removing the rubber seals, as these could hide mold and mildew.
Speaking to PEOPLE Magazine, Kyle Casteel, Senior Hydration Product Manager at Stanley, shared his thoughts on cleaning your beloved quencher.
Ideally, your Stanley Quencher or other favorite Stanley should be washed after each use. Keep your Stanley clean both inside and out for sanitary sipping! he said, adding that the dishwasher is always the best option.
Kyle continued: You can also hand wash your Stanley with warm water and mild detergent, and dry with a clean towel or let your product air dry. If your product needs a deeper clean, use a mixture of one-part baking soda and one-part warm water, and soak for up to an hour. Then clean with mild detergent once the solution is rinsed out.
On the official Stanley website, the company suggested using a combination of uncooked rice and 3oz of distilled white vinegar.
