Every pet parent wants to give their furry baby the best care, even if it’s beyond their affordability and financial constraints only make it more difficult.

Veterinary care can be hard to afford without insurance, but that doesn’t have to compromise the quality of your pet‘s life. A vet has five tips that can come to your pet’s rescue when the hospital bill is unaffordable.

Vet’s advice to take care of your pet’s veterinary care

Pets are at higher risk of health issues beyond natural causes. Sometimes, your furry baby may have to undergo emergency surgery after swallowing a screwdriver or a vinyl disk.

Regardless of the situation, veterinary care is still expensive. When you do not have the money to afford it, consider licensed veterinarian Dr. Adam Christman’s advice.

1. Don’t be embarrassed

The vet says nothing is embarrassing about being honest about your financial situation, which allows the consulting vet to come up with reasonable options.

“Be upfront about financial concerns so that you and your veterinary team can work together on financial solutions,” advises Dr. Adam.

2. Ask for alternative credit options

If you, the pet parent, don’t qualify for hard credit finance options like Care Credit or Scratch Pay, check with your vet if they offer pay-over-time options.

This buys more time to pay off the veterinary care without compromising the quality of treatment for your pet.

3. Discuss all available treatments

You don’t have to stick to the first treatment presented to you. Discuss all the available options.

Alternative options could cost less and still treat your pet for the condition – all you need to do is be upfront with your vet.

4. Consider financially-friendly clinics

It’s a huge misconception that quality treatments are only available in private institutions.

Dr. Adam rather suggests looking at financially-friendly clinics as well as “no profit and grant programs.” He says Pethelpfinder.org is one of the “best resources” with over 400 options listed on the site.

5. Prioritize wellness care of your pets

While going to the vet is secondary, you must always keep on top of all of the wellness care of your pets, including their insurance, says Dr. Adam.
