Unexpected weight loss could lead to cancer diagnosis ‘within a year’, study says

There is so much importance given to weight loss that shedding pounds effortlessly is the dream of people trying to achieve a certain body weight.

While healthy weight loss is associated with longevity and a better quality of life, unintentional weight loss should not be celebrated. If you have been losing weight without restricting your diet or exercising regularly, perhaps you should see a doctor.

Study warns of unintentional weight loss

Several factors contribute to weight loss. Some are blessed with “skinny genes” that enhance weight loss during exercise.

Whereas, an average healthy human has to restrict calories and strictly watch their diet to get rid of the paunch as an active lifestyle alone doesn’t guarantee weight loss.

However, if the numbers on the scale drop even without trying, it could indicate a serious health problem. A study from earlier this year links unexpected weight loss to an increased risk of a cancer diagnosis.

The study published by the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute warns that people who lost weight without tweaking their diet or lifestyle were at greater risk of “cancer diagnosis within a year.”

“If you are losing weight and you aren’t trying to lose weight by making changes in your exercise routine or diet, people should see their doctor to consider possible causes,” said the lead investigator, Brian Wolpin.

“Healthy weight loss can come from dietary changes or increased exercise. But unhealthy weight loss that occurs unexpectedly can be due to an underlying cancer,” added Qiaoli Wang, a research fellow at Dana-Farber and the manuscript’s first author.

It could be a ‘sign of developing cancer’

It is well-established that advanced cancer often causes weight loss, but the new study found “similar levels of weight loss occurred before the diagnosis of both early and late-stage disease.”

Therefore, identifying intentional weight loss is important for timely medical intervention increasing the chance of a more effective treatment. The study also notes that weight loss varies depending on the type of cancer.

You should keep in mind while trying to lose weight naturally that not all methods have similar effects on different individuals.

For example, men and women should eat different breakfasts to lose weight because of their biological makeup.

As with green and black tea which adietician calls natures Ozempic, researchers found that including more fiber in your diet helps lose weight naturally even when not combined with exercise.
