Top-searched Snapchat query on Valentine’s Day says a lot about people’s fidelity

Valentine’s Day is supposed to be a celebration of love for your long-term partner, but it seems as though that wasn’t the case for everyone this year.

I stumbled upon one of the most-searched Snapchat queries on Google in the United States on February 14, and it hints that people weren’t being very faithful.

Top-searched Snapchat query on Valentine’s Day

A quick look at Google Trends shows that one of the most highly-searched queries on Wednesday was: “How to freeze Snapchat location.”

People started searching this at around 5am on Valentine’s Day and it continued to rise throughout the entire day.

For anyone unaware, Snapchat has a feature where people can see your location. Its optional, but when turned on, your friends can see exactly where you are on a world map.

Snapchat lets you turn your location off whenever you want by putting yourself on ‘Ghost Mode’, but this takes your avatar off the map completely.

If your avatar is suddenly gone from the map when you usually have the feature on, friends will notice that you’re trying to be suspicious.

People were asking if they can “freeze” their location so their avatar stays on the map, but in one location – which isn’t possible.

It says a lot about people’s fidelity

Why were they doing so? Well, people could have been trying to hide the fact they were organising the perfect Valentine’s surprise for their partner. However, the more logical answer is cheating, with people trying to sneakily see another person and hiding it from their significant other.

Valentine’s is supposed to be a day that you spend with your partner, showering them with love and affection, but it’s actually pretty common for people to spend February 14 with someone else.

A 2018 study by Ashley Madison, an Australian dating site for married people which encourages cheating, found that 28% of cheaters choose to spend Valentine’s Day with their affair partner.

Victoria Milan, another unfaithful dating site, said that working late at the office is the most common excuse for cheating on the day of love.

They told The Irish Mirror it’s “the perfect excuse as it will tug at the heartstrings of their long-term partner, perhaps even evoking pity or guilt,” leaving the cheater “free to disappear and spend some quality time with their lover without being questioned”.

Why people cheat on Valentine’s Day

Psychology Today says there are three reasons why people cheat. First, there are individual reasons, which are things about your partner you just don’t like. For example, their personality or political orientation.

Second is relationship reasons, which are characteristics about the relationship itself that are unsatisfying, leading people to look elsewhere. Finally, situational reasons are things in the environment that cause infidelity, like meeting an attractive person at a bar.

As explained by Healthnews, Valentine’s Day can be a source of stress and anxiety due to the “societal pressure to have a perfect and memorable day with a partner” – and this pressure often heightens those three reasons.

Social media causes unrealistic expectations of love, leading people to feel like their needs aren’t being fulfilled and causing them to look elsewhere.
