TikToks I listen to everything’ trend is catching out the fake music lovers

We’ve all got that friend who insists they are a music connoisseur, able to identify the next big hits and name any song almost immediately. Well, now there’s a surefire way to test that out.

You won’t catch us uplifting TikTok anytime soon as some sort of cultural looking glass, but you also can’t deny how many conversations it has started and how many trends have caught on far beyond its digital confines. Recent examples might include the “very demure” trend that is still sweeping America, or the dog paw trick that had everyone testing their dog’s bond.

Does your friend really listen to everything? Only one way to know

Much like the recent dopamine menu trend, the “I listen to everything” trend has spiraled beyond its original structure. Journey over to TikTok and you might be confronted with several renditions of the trend, though all of them effectively test your musical knowledge.

One version of the trend sees content creators play one song after another without revealing the name or artist. The general idea is that people watching fill in the blanks, much like a trivia quiz.

Though the songs tend to differ depending on which TikTokker you’re watching, a particularly popular version includes Temperature (Sean Paul), Hey Soul Sister (Train), Stay (Kid LAROI), Made You Look (Meghan Trainor), Maria Maria (Santana), Work It (Missy Elliott), and Sk8er Boi (Avril Lavigne).

Another sound, which had nearly 40k videos attached to it, featured Are You Gonna Be My Girl (Jet), Gasolina (Daddy Yankee), Turn Me On (Alison Hinds and Kevin Lyttle), If I Ain’t Got You (Alicia Keys), Live Like You Were Dying (Tim McGraw), The Reason (Hoobastank), I Don’t Want to Be (Gavin DeGraw), This Love (Maroon 5), She Will Be Loved (Maroon 5).

A separate version of the trend sees content creators pick a song that they view as obscure. They then play the sound in a video while holding up a gun finger like they’re holding you hostage to sing it.

Popular songs used in these versions include A Match Into Water (Pierce The Veil), Happy Nation (Ace of Base), The Bad Touch (Bloodhound Gang), and Teenage Dirtbag (Wheatus).

TikTok users see a theme emerging

As you might expect, the trend has seen a lot of passionate debates around what makes music popular, and what exactly the “everything” in “I listen to everything” means.

Funnily enough, it seems as though most of the songs on people’s lists are taken straight from popular culture and the playlists radio stations have on repeat.

“All these songs were on movies, TV shows, especially the radio. They were everywhere everyone listened to them,” one person wrote on TikTok.

“I listen to everything music challenge” proceeds to play a series of famous songs, from some very popular artists, played by most mainstream radio stations,” another said.

The narrative is a lot more positive beneath videos that featured only one song, with many finding community amongst like-minded music lovers.
