TikTok has theory that bisexual women all own a green velvet couch and it’s ‘too real’

People on TikTok have a theory that all bisexual women own a green velvet couch and it’s taken over social media.

The idea first emerged in 2022, when a number of celebrities even joined in the trend, and has been circling ever since.

TikTok’s ‘Green Couch Theory’

It was started by a TikTok user called Tish who said in a viral video: “Okay serious question. If you identify as bisexual, do you own a green velvet couch? Just checking”

In the background, you can see that she has a green velvet sofa with a pink cushion on top, and other women quickly revealed that they do too in the comments.

One person wrote: “Okay now this is funny. I’m a lesbian. I was in the market for a couch and REALLY wanted a forest green velvet couch.”

“I own a green velvet chair and almost bought the whole couch, loveseat and chair combo two years ago,” said another.

A third person added “Outed by a couch” and another agreed: “This is too real.”

Her clip got almost 300,000 views and was stitched by hundreds of other users who also showed off their green couches.

Celebrities join in the trend

After that, model Emily Ratajkowski shared a clip of herself sitting on a similar green sofa while smiling at the camera. Many took this as her coming out as bisexual, and she later addressed her sexuality in an interview with Harpers Bazaar.

“I think sexuality is on a sliding scale,” she said. “I dont really believe in straight people. My girlfriend came over and was like, ‘B***h, have you seen the green-couch thing?’ She was laughing at me because my green couch is so big.”

“I want to be able to have fun with how I present myself in the world without feeling like Im a bad feminist or a good feminist,” she continued. “Duh. I dont want to be a part of your club if you dont want to have me. Its fine!”

Around the same time, actress Shay Mitchell also shared a video of herself dramatically laying down on her green couch. People similarly thought this was her way of coming out, although she’s never explicitly addressed her sexuality.

During a YouTube video with her co-star Ian Harding, she was asked if she’s ever been attracted to a woman and said: “Wow. Every day. For me, its never been ‘I need to find a boyfriend, I need to find this’, I truly feel like I do fall in love with a person.”

Speaking about her Pretty Little Liar character, Emily, who was part of the LGBTQ+ community, Shay toldtold Maxim: “Look, Emily doesnt label herself, and I dont label myself either. I fall in love with the spirit of somebody. Love is love, and thats something that Ill keep saying.”

Theory takes over social media

The theory has been flooding social media ever since, with one person writing on Twitter/X: “Good morning I fulfilled the bisexual prophecy and bought a green velvet couch today.”

“Currently lounging on the green velvet couch of my bisexual dreams,” another said.

Someone else wrote: “The bisexual urge to have a green velvet couch in my house.”

Who knew the couch you have could say so much about your sexuality!
