Three times you should never brush your teeth explained by a dentist

A dentist has gone viral on TikTok after posting a video explaining three times you should never brush your teeth.

Brushing your teeth is something that has likely been a part of your everyday life since you were a child, but with different advice given out by various sources, whether theyre from our own dentist, your parents or online health experts, it can be tricky to keep track of how best to keep our gnashers in tip-top condition.

Three times you should not brush your teeth

Dr Shaadi Manouchehri is a qualified dentist who posts helpful tips on how to care for your teeth via her social media accounts and a video she posted recently has gone viral on TikTok, earning more than 12 million views at the time of writing.

The video sees Dr Manouchehri explaining three occasions you should avoid brushing your teeth which are:

  • After vomiting
  • After breakfast
  • After eating sweets/candy

In each instance, this is because the mouth is in a very acidic state. According to the dentist, brushing when the mouth is very acidic can wear down your enamel, the protective outer layer on your teeth.

Instead of brushing straight away, Dr Manouchehri recommends waiting for 60 minutes to allow acid levels in the mouth to reduce and for the enamel to re-harden after being exposed to acid.

Dr Shaadi Manouchehris advice is backed up by several scientific studies including one carried out at the University of Zrich in 2007 which found that abrasion of acid-softened enamel was fourfold higher compared to sound surfaces when brushing.

Social media reacts

Dr Manouchehris video has sparked quite a debate with more than 4,600 comments across both Instagram and TikTok.

One TikTok user said: But doc, it tastes icky after the vom. To which Dr Manouchehri replied: You can rinse with mouthwash or water instead and brush after 30-60 minutes.

Over on Instagram, another commented: After breakfast =.. I have always had my breakfast and then brushed. Are we supposed to do it the opposite way?

Geez, I wish I wasnt 26, seven fillings deep before hearing this information, said this commenter.

This Instagram user joked: Never brush my teeth&got it!
