The weapon you should choose in a zombie apocalypse, approved by a firearm expert
Despite America’s love of guns, choosing a firearm to fight back hordes of undead in the zombie apocalypse is not the smartest idea, a historian and firearm expert has explained.
From Zombieland to Resident Evil, World War Z to Train to Busan, zombie movies have been a staple in cinema since 1968’s Night of the Living Dead. TV shows like The Walking Dead only added fuel to the fire and now we are obsessed with what we would do, wouldn’t do, and how we would survive. Thankfully, besides a few diseases nicknamed zombies, the living dead are a work of fiction.

Don’t pick a gun in a zombie apocalypse
Picture this. Your entire town has been wiped out by a zombie virus, but of course, they have to be called something eerily similar like walkers, lurkers, clickers, rotters, or stiffs. You stumble upon a cache of weapons (think Hunger Games) and you get to pick the weapon of your dreams. What do you choose?
Before you make what could be your last decision, consider advice from Jonathan Ferguson, a firearm keeper and expert at the Leeds Royal Armouries Museum in England.
Taking to TikTok earlier this week, Jonathan explained: “Guns need loading, you need to find ammunition. They need a lot of skill to use, whereas impact weapons don’t, but you can still do a lot of damage with blunt force. So I don’t actually recommend firearms.”
While he didn’t recommend a gun, Jonathan did note that it heavily depends on the country and location you are trapped in when the zombies arrive. Given that 65 million gun owners in America feel they need a gun to feel safe, Americans might not have trouble finding a firearm.
Nonetheless, the expert recommended turning to blunt-impact weapons like baseball bats, poles, hammers, and just about anything that has some weight behind it. His top pick was a horseman’s hammer, a weapon of Middle Eastern origin.
Followers had more suggestions – not all of them are good
There’s a reason that zombies tend to take over the world so quickly in TV and film, and that’s because, for every amazing idea, the human race has dozens of outright awful ones. Jonathan’s TikTok comments were proof of that.
One person suggested: “Id go bow, katana, and dagger.”
Other top picks included:
- Cricket bat
- Spade
