Human biologist recommends one simple trick to help cure hangovers

Waking up feeling rough after a night out drinking is the worst thing, but a human biologist has recommended one simple trick to help cure those pesky hangovers.

The headaches and nausea will be a distant memory if you just remember to do this one easy thing – and it’s something we’ve all heard time and time again.

Trick to eliminating hangovers

Gary Brecka has gone viral on TikTok after explaining that the one trick is simply “hydrating”.

“Drink water, drink water,” he repeated, telling everyone to alternate each cocktail with a glass of water on the night.

When you drink, the alcohol converts into acetaldehyde, which is the poison that makes you feel really rubbish.

However, dehydration also contributes to that unwell feeling, so drinking water throughout the night will help massively.

Medline Plus recommends drinking a glass of water in between drinks containing alcohol, to “decrease dehydration”.

Things to do in the morning

As well as drinking that all-important water, Brecka explained that there are some other things you can do in the morning to feel better.

He claimed that doing breath work outside, a cold plunge or a steam room will “get you over a hangover in 90 minutes”.

Deep breathing exercises increase oxygen levels in the blood, which has a number of positive effects on your body.

This includes alkalizing your blood PH, reducing inflammation and elevating your mood, WebMD explains.

Other hangover remedies

Medline Plus adds that you should:

  • Drink alcohol-containing drinks slowly and on a full stomach, and drink alcohol in moderation
  • Consume electrolyte solutions (such as sports drinks) and bouillon soup the following day to replacing the salt and potassium you lost
  • Get plenty of rest as even if you feel good in the morning, the lasting effects of alcohol reduce your ability to perform at your best
  • Avoid taking any medicines that contain acetaminophen (such as Tylenol) as it may cause liver damage when combined with alcohol
