The best way a woman can propose to a man, according to a dating expert
Once every four years, as February gets a 29th day, women can drop down on one knee and propose to their partner, according to tradition.
Though the world has evolved past the days of such antiquated traditions, they are still observed in some parts of the world. Modern celebrations also take inspiration from such holidays, modernizing them to contemporary attitudes.
What is Bachelors Day?

In Irish tradition, Bachelors Day falls every four years on February 29. It was the one day when it was socially acceptable for a woman to propose to a man. It was also called Ladies’ Privilege in some circles.
The tradition is somewhat controversial in 2024, after all, theres nothing stopping women from proposing on any other day of the year. It’s also rather hetero-centric, suggesting that two women in a relationship have to wait four years.
Nonetheless, it is said that the holiday began when Saint Bridget bargained with Saint Patrick in the 5th century. She was sick of waiting for men to propose so asked Saint Patrick for the chance to get down on bended knee. Patrick initially suggested once every seven years, but negotiating master Bridget brought the offer down to four.
Advice for women
Though women dont need a dedicated day to propose, its still the cultural norm for men to do the proposal. Still, if youre hoping to break from tradition, heres some advice.
James Preece, resident dating expert at The Focus, told us: If you are going to do this, then I’d suggest you go big. If you don’t make enough effort, then he might see the proposal as a joke or something insincere.
You want him to take it seriously and say yes. Just be aware that it could be a bit confusing to him as it’s not normally the woman who proposes and he might not be expecting it.

On the actual proposal, James suggested picking a location that has a special meaning or story for both of you.
This could be the place you first met, had the first date or even the first kiss, he said. You’ll also need to prepare some meaningful words that let him know how important this all is to you. Men love to have their egos flattered so make him feel good. Have someone on hand to take a photo too as you’ll want to remember this moment in the future.
Like with any proposal, its important to consider that the other person might not have popped the question because they arent ready.
