Tesla Cybertruck owners warned by viral ‘carrot test’ video on TikTok

The futuristic Tesla Cybertruck has been the source of much criticism since it was first unveiled in 2019 and Elon Musk infamously demonstrated the Armor Glass windows that broke upon impact and now, a new viral video dubbed online as the carrot test has given owners of the vehicle cause for concern.

Teslas Cybertruck was launched with the intention of disrupting the highly competitive pick-up truck market within the US with its sci-fi-inspired design and the first trucks started being delivered in November 2023.

Tesla Cybertruck carrot test video goes viral

The carrot test video in question sees a car reviewer holding a carrot (meant to represent a finger) underneath the electric front trunk of the Cybertruck as it closes. The sharp edges of the door mechanism instantly slice through the carrot, leaving many viewers wincing as they imagine a similar fate for their fingers.

While the video has spread across social media to platforms including Instagram and TikTok, the clip originated on YouTube, specifically in a video posted by Out of Spec Reviews which is presented by Kyle Conner.

The full video is a deep dive into many of the Cybertrucks lesser-discussed features and also offers a comparison between the Tesla vehicle and several competitors including the Rivian R1T.

As well as testing the front trunk, Conner also sliced several carrots and a pack of hot dog sausages in other entry points into the Tesla including its passenger doors and tailgate.

During the viral video, Conner also performed the same crush test with the Rivian and while the Teslas passenger door completely sliced through several hot dogs, the R1T only trapped the sausages in the door, although it was just as lethal for a number of poor carrots.

Where the Rivian stood above, however, was that its front trunk features a pinch sensor that detects if there is a blockage and prevents the door mechanism from closing fully to save your fingers (or indeed carrots) from getting trapped.

But a lesson that many car passengers will have been taught since they were kids – and this applies to all vehicles with ordinary doors and not just Teslas – is that you should always be careful when closing car doors as accidentally getting a finger trapped can be immensely painful, which is something this writer can attest to – thanks, Dad.

Social media reacts

As the Tesla carrot test video has spread across social media, there has been quite a reaction to it.

One commenter on YouTube said: As someone who, as a kid, had his fingers on the edge of a car door and was shut by the driver thinking I was fully out of the car, I approve of these tests and I’m sure parents with little kids would appreciate it as well.

While a second joked: Nice to know you can use the Cybertruck hood and doors as interrogation devices.

The way the front hood slices the carrot gave me chills, said a third. There was no pause, no nothing, it just closed. Cold.

A fourth YouTube commenter wrote: It’s important to note… carrots are WAYYYYY weaker than fingers. They might be detecting stall current in the motor. Everything you used in this video probably deforms compliantly before that stall current is reached.

Meanwhile, an Instagram user said: Well its obvious dont put your damn finger on there.

And finally, this social media user wrote: Stop sticking your carrot in places it doesn’t belong >#
