Teens are increasingly using nicotine product most parents can’t identify, says study

Nicotine addiction is one of the biggest health concerns among youngsters, and a new study highlights the risks of using a specific nicotine product that isn’t popular among older adults.

Despite the growing popularity of alternatives to smoking, the health risk is common when using any nicotine product. In fact, vaping is two times harder to quit than smoking and it leads to ‘chronic’ symptoms.

Nicotine pouches are common among teens

For the unversed, oral nicotine pouches are small packets filled with flavored powder containing nicotine and other chemicals. While most are familiar with cigarettes and e-cigarettes, only 1 in 4 can identify the product popular among Gen Z.

Researchers at the OSUCCC James Center for Tobacco Researchers are concerned about youngsters increasingly becoming dependent on the more convenient alternative to smoking or vaping.

As oral nicotine pouches are tucked between the lips and gums, they don’t have to worry about spitting out saliva or creating smoke in public places.

We’re starting to hear from college students that they find it easier to use nicotine pouches at work or in class because they are easier to conceal. They also do not require you to spit excess saliva like older tobacco oral products (dip, snuff), said Keller-Hamilton, studying nicotine pouch use and regulation at the Center for Tobacco Research.

As nicotine pouches can be disguised as mints, parents are advised to be aware of what their children carry in their bags and back pockets.

There is so little awareness about the harmful product that only 25% of people surveyed could identify what it is, even though 70% believe it’s harmful to health.

It is as addictive as other tobacco products

Two major concerns surrounding nicotine pouches are highlighted in the recent study – loose industry regulations and addiction.

Using any kind of nicotine product is believed to be a gateway to other substances, especially when the brain isn’t fully developed.

The researchers warn that nicotine pouches prime the brain for stronger nicotine addiction as the user may not find the former satisfying in the long run. They may consider other harmful products to curb the craving.

Its really important for parents to talk with their kids about the dangers of these products and seek help from their pediatrician if theyre concerned about nicotine addiction,” said the lead author.
