Survey reveals most popular pizza toppings in America, and pineapple is surprisingly high

The yearly calendar is full of many weird and wonderful national days and February 9 stands out as a day that deserves to become its own full-blown holiday like Christmas as its National Pizza Day and to celebrate, were taking a look at the most popular pizza toppings in America.

In 2023, YouGov carried out a survey asking 1,000 US citizens about their favorite types of pizza topping and while several classic options unsurprisingly came out on top, some less conventional choices such as pineapple also scored quite highly, adding fuel to the fire of the pineapple on pizza debate.

17. Jalape�os | 2%

Pizza is the ultimate comfort food so why would you want to ruin that comfort by adding some fiery jalape�os? That hasnt stopped 2% of survey respondents listing the spicy peppers as their favorite topping.

16. Fresh Basil | 2%

While this may be a staple of the classic Neapolitan-style margherita pizza, its not a topping that features on many contemporary varieties of pizza.

We hope youre not planning on kissing anyone on Valentine’s Day after having a garlic-covered pizza.

14. Ham | 2%

Despite being one-half of the surprisingly popular ham and pineapple Hawaiian pizza, ham is only the preferred topping of 2% of respondents.

Like basil, olives are a popular topping in Mediterranean countries but they have fallen out of favor with many pizza lovers.

Like on burgers, onions can add a bit of zesty tartness to any deliciously greasy pizza.

A staple of meat feast pizzas, the humble meatball is the favorite topping of just 3% of Americans.

8. Peppers | 4%

Peppers work a treat on barbecue-based and Supreme style pizzas, but youre unlikely to find them on more traditional varieties.

You can never go wrong with some crispy bacon on anything and pizza is no exception to that rule.

Despite the controversy surrounding putting pineapple on pizza, the sweet-tasting fruit is the sixth most popular pizza topping in America.

5. Chicken | 6%

Being one of the most-consumed meats in the world, chicken was always bound to end up on pizza as well.

4. Mushrooms | 9%

As a personal despiser of mushrooms, it sickens me that this topping is so high on this list.

Sausage meat is a hugely versatile pizza topping and one that has made its way onto numerous varieties.

1. Pepperoni | 24%

It should come as little surprise that pepperoni is the most popular pizza topping among Americans, with a whopping 24% of respondents listed it as their number-one choice.
