Starbucks users say new Oleato ‘olive oil’ coffee is having a side effect on their poop

Starbucks latest olive oil-infused drink, Oleato, is trending on social media as customers complain about the drinks ability to make you poop.

Coffee shops might be running out of ideas. Each month, their new releases get stranger and stranger, much like Costas new Hot Milkshakes. Starbucks recently added to that ever-growing strange list in the form of olive oil-infused drinks.

What is Starbucks Oleato?

The journey began last year when Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz visited Italy and noticed that Italians drink their coffee with olive oil. Of course, he decided to roll out the idea across the nation. After a rather rocky trial at locations in Seattle, Los Angeles, and New York, Starbucks officially launched the drink on Wednesday.

In a statement released today, Starbucks said: Infused with award-winning Partanna extra virgin olive oil, Oleato is more than a drink. It is a revelation in coffee, one that is luxurious and next-level. Once an idea, today a drinking experience available nationwide.

Oleato, which means with oil in Italian, comes in three distinct variations. While the first is a traditional (boring) latte, the second is a golden foam iced shaken espresso with toffee nut.

Olive oil is used in the final drink as a whipped cream flavor, which can be paired with the Iced Chai Tea Latte, Iced Matcha Tea Latte, Dragon Refresher, and Paradise Refresher.

Prices typically range from $6.45 to $6.75, but they are dependent on location.

Theres a running complaint (pardon the pun)

While the actual taste of the drink has still divided the nation, there is a running issue that seems to have been present during the trial run in 2023. You see, last year, people were complaining that it was making them go to the toilet a lot.

That oleato drink from starbs makin my stomach speak, one person said, while another joked, IBD patient here. I wouldnt touch these drinks with a ten-foot pole.

It seems that issue is still very much alive, as customers have taken to social media to complain about their poop issues.

One person tweeted today: Starbucks really tryin to make us s**t our pants, man. Who asked for olive oil in their coffee?! WTF is Oleato?!

This is good for the elderly! another person joked, while someone replied, When that 3rd cup of coffee doesn’t get the bowels moving&

The reason behind the poop issue

The reason behind the liquid laxative is widely reported, and its largely due to caffeine being a stimulant and olive oil being a relaxant.

(The drink) is not going to make somebody physically ill from the standpoint of having a negative impact on health, a doctor told CNN. But more of that uncomfortable feeling of having to go in the bathroom or potentially cramping.

Rabia De Latour, MD, a gastroenterologist and assistant professor at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine, also told SELF that it’s the combination of coffee and olive oil that is particularly powerful. This is, in part, due to the fats in olive oil smoothing the insides of the bowel.
