Starbucks just launched a pork-flavored coffee and it’s getting a ‘hard pass’

Starbucks has just released a new coffee that’s infused with pork and people think it sounds totally disgusting.

It comes after a range of olive oil coffees just launched in the US. Thankfully, the meaty espresso is only available in China.

Starbucks launches pork coffee

The unusual coffee combines Dongpo Braised Pork Flavor Sauce with a normal latte – espresso and steamed milk. Then, more pork sauce is swirled on top and the whole thing is finished with a real piece of pork breast meat.

Photos of the drink circling social media show a frothy coffee with a swirl of red sauce on top and a square slice of pork sitting on a skewer.

It’s called the “Abundant Year Savory Latte” or “Lucky Savory Latte” and has exclusively launched in China this month to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Pork is eaten during the celebrations to bring prosperity, so Starbucks has brought this tradition into coffee.

Dongpo, named after the famous Chinese poet and gastronome Su Dongpo, is a dish made by pan-frying and then�red-cooking pork belly. The meat is cut into thick, five-centimetre squares with the skin kept on.

The drink is said to bring “unexpected savory and sweet flavors” and is exclusively on sale at 25 Starbucks Reserve stores across China for 68 yuan ($9.45).

It’s getting a ‘hard pass’

The drink has caught attention across the world, and it’s safe to say nobody is keen.

One person wrote on Twitter/X: “Pork-flavored coffee NO!!! STARBUCKS JUST NO!!!!!”

“Pork-flavored coffee at Starbucks. Hard pass for me,” said another.

A third person added: “Ohhhhhhh Starbucks is wicked dropping pork flavored coffee.”

“One word. Spew,” someone else wrote with a puking emoji.

2024 marks the 25th anniversary of Starbucks entering the Chinese mainland market. The coffee giant now has more than 7,000 stores across the Chinese mainland and is aiming to reach 9,000 stores by 2025.
