South Koreas 4B movement has taken over TikToks boy sober dating trend

Though TikToks boy sober trend began just last month, women in South Korea have been engaging with their own version called the 4B Movement since 2019.

While most social media trends are frivolous at best and cringy at worst, some draw inspiration from real life. Others are just absolutely bonkers.

The boy sober trend popped up on social media recently after being coined by comedian Hope Woodard. Her rules included things like no dating apps, no dates, no exes, and no hook-ups with men.

My whole life Ive been saying Im single, Im single, Im single no, Ive never been single. Ive always had a situationship youre not single if someone is taking up your brain space, she said.

If youre asking yourself why women would go boy sober, then simply take a look at the news.

Boy sober could also offer you a new perspective when you rejoin the world of dating, dating expert James Preece earlier told The Focus.

Dating can quickly become frustrating if you arent having much success. After a while, going out on dates can feel like a huge chore and you almost give up hope. So much swiping, talking, and a lot of time wasted. Once it stops being fun then its definitely a good idea to stop for a while, he said.

Use it as a chance to really think about what you want. When you start back, focus on quality rather than quantity. Its better to have a few good matches than lots of mediocre ones, he added.

What is the 4B Movement?

The 4B Movement was initially started in 2019 as a direct opposition to South Koreas rampant sexism. It was reportedly inspired by Cho Nam-Joos 2016 novel, Kim Jiyoung, which details the relentless misogyny and inequality in the country.

Much like its TikTok counterpart, the 4B Movement laid out strict rules for women to abide by and they all make up the so-called 4Bs. They are Bihon (no to heterosexual marriage), Bichulsan (no to childbirth), Biyeonae (no to dating), and Bisekseu (no to heterosexual sexual relationships).

Content creator Aleisa (@wtfaleisa) recently shed light on the 4B Movement in a TikTok that has since amassed over 800k views and 150k likes.

She said: So thats the 4B Movement and why I am obsessed with it. I think we should have the 4B movement everywhere.

Aleisas fellow TikTok users also seem eager for an American 4B Movement, as one person penned: Why do I lowkey feel and think that 4b movement can solve more problems including overpopulation.

I have been completely by myself for the past 4 years and I HAVE NEVER BEEN HAPPIER, another said.
