Simple plastic product is a lifesaver during my dogs dinnertime

If your dog has the habit of eating too quickly, or perhaps they simply don’t enjoy their food, then I’ve got a remarkably easy fix for your dinner-time problems.

Anyone with a dog will tell you it’s far from fun and games constantly, which is precisely why it’s okay that not everyone should own a pooch. When they’re not urinating on your furniture, they’re chewing on it, and when they finally settle down it only takes a slight noise to kick off the drama once again. Seriously, it’s hard work owning a pet.

Your dog eating its food too fast can cause some serious issues

Much like their human companions, dogs need to slowly eat their food in order to digest it properly without issues. Despite this, the iconic Ack ack sound is usually present in most pet households as dogs choke on their food and attempt to belch it back up.

When downing their food without a care in the world, dogs can have the habit of also gulping down mouthfuls of air. Once in the stomach, the food and air expand to create digestive issues and an overwhelming sense of discomfort.

Though this most often ends in a floor’s worth of vomit, it can also cause serious health conditions like gastric dilatation-volvulus. This nasty condition causes the stomach to twist and potentially rupture, which can only be solved through expensive surgery.

While most dogs have a habit of gulping down their food, it can also be a sign of other health conditions like diabetes mellitus and hormone issues like Cushing’s disease. It’s always best to check with your vet if you have any reason for concern.

Introducing the plastic product that will solve your issue

The Focus is pretty familiar with my Cocker Spaniel Maggie after I earlier explored topics like TikTok’s dog-paw trick and keeping her occupied while working from home.

Since she was a puppy, Maggie has battled her self-restraint with an eerie similarity to how I fight against the need to consume cheese. As soon as the clock hit five, she would be at your heels insisting that her dinner needed to be dished up. The moment Maggie set her sight on it, she would lunge with unrivaled passion.

For us, the turning point of Maggie’s dinner-time experience was when we purchased a slow feeder bowl.

Essentially, a slow feeder is a bowl that has obstructions within it to slow down a dog’s progression. These obstructions are usually ridges or shapes where pieces of the food become trapped, making it more difficult for her to eat quickly.

They are readily available in a range of colors, sizes, and shapes, from just about every pet retailer imaginable. If that fails, Amazon has its own impressive collection.

After purchasing a slow feeder bowl, we also invested in far too many snuffle mats, which are usually made of fabric and feature hideaways, holes, and secret openings for you to tuck food into.
