Shower Onions: Meaning
This month has seen internet users searching for a meaning behind “shower onions.”
Some believe this term is just a prank. One Twitter user wrote: “I’m unconvinced this isn’t a cross tiktok\twitter performance art practical joke.”
But others explain that “shower onions” are a real thing. Supposedly, half a freshly cut onion can be placed in a smelly or musty bathroom to help remove the bathroom’s odours.
Do onions really absorb smells?
Yes. Onions have been proven to absorb smells.
At first it may seem counterproductive, given that the freshly cut onion will release its odours to begin with. But give it time and the onion will start to absorb its surrounding smells.
Cleaning company SafeSpace explains: “Leave the onion in the room overnight. Although it will obviously smell like an onion at the start, the vegetable will absorb surrounding odors and lose its own smell. When you remove it the next day, the air should be fresh and odor-free.”
