Scientists discover a natural sugar that can treat male baldness

Baldness is one of the most common issues men face. It affects them mentally by stirring several negative emotions such as lack of confidence, low esteem, depression, and more.

However, a new study appears to have found a solution to the problem that affects up to “50 percent of men worldwide”. Scientists think a “natural sugar” can enhance hair growth after seeing positive results in mice. No, it isn’t the same as the healthy alternatives for artificial sugar that benefit the brain.

New study says ‘natural sugar’ can cure male pattern baldness

If wigs and hair transplants don’t interest you, scientists at the University of Sheffield and COMSATS University Pakistan have found a better and more effective solution that can be found in our bodies.

They discovered that a sugar called 2-deoxy-D-ribose (2dDR) is a key factor in hair growth – it’s naturally found in animals and humans. The team studied the compound for eight years, to understand its impact on healing wounds and forming new blood vessels.

During the study, the scientists reportedly noticed new hair around the healing wounds and they “appeared to grow more quickly compared to those that hadnt been treated.”

To determine the natural sugar’s effect, the team staged a “model of testosterone-driven hair loss in mice – similar to the cause of pattern baldness in men.” The team witnessed hair growth in mice which they credited to a small dose of naturally occurring sugar.

It can be delivered for styling gel, scientists say

Scientists involved in the study said the results they saw were “promising”, although it warrants further investigation. However, it could be an effective approach to treat hair loss in men.

Professor Sheila MacNeil, Emeritus Professor of Tissue Engineering at the University of Sheffield, said:

“Male pattern baldness is such a common condition, affecting men all over the world, but at the moment there are only two FDA licensed drugs to treat it.”

“Our research suggests that the answer to treating hair loss might be as simple as using a naturally occurring deoxy ribose sugar to boost the blood supply to the hair follicles to encourage hair growth,” she added.

What more? They believe the natural sugar could serve as a substitute for your styling gels and dressings, thus making it an “attractive candidate to explore further for treatment of hair loss in men.”
