5 ‘key characteristics’ you need in a partner

“If you have these traits, you have the makings of the strongest partner for you,” Paul Brunsonsaid during an episode of Steven Bartlett’s Diary Of A CEO podcast.

He listed five characteristics that go beyond the usual ones, like loyalty, kindness and honesty, digging deeper into what truly makes a good significant other.

1. Emotionally fit

The first trait you should look for in a partner is someone who is emotionally fit and can deal with life’s ups and downs.

“To have someone who’s emotionally stable, who can go through the lows and still remain themselves is incredibly important,” Brunson said.

There’s no way of avoiding life’s trials and tribulations, but it’s how you deal with them and move on that’s important.

2. Courageous vision

Another key characteristic is a person with courageous vision, meaning they have drive to get up in the morning and a vision for themselves in life.

“You want someone who feels like they’re on the path to something, because if you don’t feel like you’re on the path to something, you are stuck in mediocrity,” the matchmaker continued.

A life that is just mediocre is not one you want to be living. You need a partner who has goals, passions and aims.

3. Resiliently resourceful

The next important trait is a person who is resiliently resourceful and can quickly bounce back when times are hard.

You will both be knocked down in life, but it’s important that your lifelong partner can get back up and carry on.

The relationship guru said they need to figure out a way to take all the pieces that have been cracked and “create a beautiful mosaic”.

4. Open-minded

Another important characteristic is a partner who is open-minded and curious, which Brunson said is “one of the sexiest traits in the world”.

“If you have a partner who’s curious, they want to know everything about you,” he continued. “They listen to you and they care about what they’re hearing.”

That allows you to have strong, emotional intimacy with the person which is key for a long and happy relationship.

5. Compassionate support

Finally, you also need someone who has compassionate support and is always going to be there for you no matter what.

They need to say “When you get knocked down, I’m right here for you,” and be by your side through everything that life throws.
