Popular high-fat diet can ‘restart a stalled period’, says study

According to a new study, a popular diet can fix irregular menstrual cycles even in women who believe their period “stalled for good.”

The menstrual cycle is often influenced by changes in hormones, lifestyle, diet, and other underlying health conditions. While you should never ignore certain period symptoms, consuming foods rich in healthy fats is proven effective in “restarting” it.

Keto diet can solve your period problems

The researchers from Ohio State University found that the presence of ketones, through the keto diet or supplements, influences the menstrual cycle.

They made this observation while comparing weight loss results to low-fat and ketogenic diets with and without the addition of ketone supplements.

The Keto diet includes high-fat and low-carb foods, which convert fat into ketones used by cells in the body and brain as an alternative to glucose.

The female participants were an average age of 34 and were “healthy but overweight.” Some women included in the study reported that they hadn’t had a period in over a year, while one of them had never had a period in her life.

However, they noticed changes in their menstrual cycle while following the keto diet or taking supplements with ketone.

“There were six women who hadn’t had a period in over a year- who felt like their typical cycles were over. And their periods actually restarted on the diet,” said Madison Kackley, lead author of the study.

The researchers concluded that the presence of ketones may “help regulate women’s health in regard to endocrine, cognitive, and metabolic influences.”

Ketones had an overall effect on women’s menstrual cycle as even those who got their period regularly noticed changes in its frequency while following the said diet.
