27% of Brits can’t do this simple household task

The team at Halton Stairlifts shockingly found that the average Gen Z Brit doesnt have the skill set required to do a plethora of manual tasks.

Among the most noteworthy was the admission that 27% of them dont know how to change a lightbulb! Theres a dad joke somewhere in there.

A whopping 39% of them also didnt know how to bleed a radiator, which could actually save them considerable money in the cold months. Other DIY tasks the Brits utterly fail at include unclogging a drain, which 45% said theyd need a professional for.

The above instances are fairly simple tasks, but there are worries over the quality of work from the average British person. 32% said they couldnt paint a room to an adequate level, with a staggering 52% also admitting to lacking confidence in hanging wallpaper.

The survey results serve as a call to action for both individuals and organizations to address the DIY knowledge gap, said Neil McKenzie, CEO of Halton Stairlifts. There’s a clear need for more accessible, engaging, and practical learning resources that empower young Brits to reclaim these essential skills.

How does America compare?

Though Halton Stairlifts did complete the survey in the States, there is a lot of information readily available regarding America and its DIY habits. Unfortunately, it paints an equally questionable picture.

As reported by Ruby Home, a luxury real estate company, 45% of Americans reported completely butchering an at-home DIY project.

But that doesnt mean Americans arent willing to give it a go, even if it means they muck it up. Data from Google Trends found that 27% have started a project and not finished it and 29% have broken something they tried to repair.
