Nurses’ emotional farewell when baby passes away ‘means everything’ to parents

An emotional video featuring the farewell of a baby when it passes away has prompted mothers to thank nurses and doctors for extending support during the most difficult time of their lives.

Childbirth is one of the most memorable moments, and losing your baby before it experiences life is devastating. Labor and delivery nurses do everything they can to support grieving families including a heart-warming final goodbye for their little ones.

What happens when a patient’s baby passes away

Neo-natal death – passing away of a baby within 28 days of life – happens in about 3.58 per 1000 live births, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

When a patient’s baby passes away in the hospital, the labor and delivery nurses try to make a mother’s final moment with her baby as special as possible.

L&D nurse Sarah, who goes by the name Labor junkie on her social media accounts, demonstrates in one of her videos what the hospital staff are trained to do when a baby passes away.

She reveals that the baby gets a “special bassinet”, and the nurses prepare the mattress the same way they would for alive babies.

They include a baby blanket that all babies get after birth and place the bassinet in the parent’s room with a self-cooling mattress so the mother and child can have “unlimited time” together.

Emotional farewell includes special gifts

While the parents get a gift box, the nurse “very carefully” picks out “the perfect hand-sewn gown” to place on the baby.

They also set up curtains around the patient’s bed to ensure the mother gets to capture her final moments with her baby in the form of pictures.

Even though nothing can possibly ease the pain of a mother who has just lost her child, the nurse’s beautiful gestures and the well-thought-out presents mean a lot to several grieving mothers and their families.

One user commented under the video: “Coming from a mama who received one of these boxes..THIS MEANT EVERYTHING TO ME! I had the wonderful blessing of meeting the RN who helped come up with the memory box program and let me tell you hugging her neck is a day I’ll never forget”

“Taking time to honor the life of that baby and giving parents time to be with them before never seeing their child ever again& its powerful. Thanks for doing what youre doing,” said another.

A third user shared: “I gave birth to stillborn identical twin girls in my 8th month. It’s been 35 years and still seems like yesterday, Nurses are so wonderful and caring during such a difficult time.”
