Normal thing ‘only Americans do’ that Brit simply ‘can’t comprehend’

A British man has gone viral on TikTok after outlining something ‘only Americans do’ that really riles him up.

Josh has more than 4.4 million followers and often shares videos about the differences between the two countries.

Thing ‘only Americans do’

The TikTok user explained that Americans measure things by time not distance, which is really annoying when trying to get directions.

“Being a Brit, this thing blows my mind,” he said. “I can’t comprehend it. Every single American will measure distance by time and not miles.”

He “learnt this the hard way” when living in the US as 10 miles in a city and in the countryside “are very different things”.

An American will tell you it’s an hour and a half away but “it ain’t,” he said – adding that people also love to try and beat the time given.

Josh claimed they only give directions “using landmarks they know” rather than actual road names too.

Americans know they do it

In the comments, people across the US are saying they do measure things by time, and they stand by their decision.

One person wrote: “FACTS. We live to beat the time the GPS says we will get there.”

“Miles aren’t relevant to planning your day,” said another.

A third person added: “I don’t even know how far away my work is, but I know it takes me 15-20 minutes.”

“The only time I consider miles is when I’m running out of gas,” someone else wrote.

Another agreed: “When it takes 42 hours to cross your country, you measure in time.”

Countries view distance differently

In another viral video, the TikTok user was shocked at how people in America view long distances.

“If you were in the UK and somebody said the store is over 45 minutes away, let’s not do that, that is way too far,” he said.

However, Josh explained that Americans will drive over an hour just to get a drink from the gas station, and it’s normal.

People in the US never knew this was unusual as it’s such a normal part of life.

Someone wrote: “Heck 45 minutes, that’s less than most people’s commute to work in the US.”

“If that blows your mind, just ask American parents how far they drive for kids’ sport/dance/theatre,” said another.

A third added: “I drive an hour to eat dinner and drive home.”

So many cultural differences!
