‘Nic-sick is the rising side-effect of vaping that people need to know more about

A psychologist has shared her largest concern when it comes to the rise in young people addicted to vapes.

Nic-sick is an illness, ranging from fatigue and pale skin to even being fatal, that is reportedly on the rise in young people. The nicotine-based sickness is rarely caused by smoking cigarettes, but is far more common when vaping, due to the high levels of nicotine in comparison.

A psychologist recently retailed exactly how rife being nic-sick is becoming, including one teenager who regularly vomited strawberry-flavored vomit – and why shes so concerned about it.

Nic-sick is a concerning sickness for vapers

Psychologist and researcher Claire Wakefield appeared on popular podcast Its A Lot to discuss her views on vaping among young people.

For Wakefield, theres one worrying impact that isnt often discussed. The ones that hit home for me – where there’s tons of evidence – is acute nicotine toxicity, which they call nic-sick. That’s essentially when you have too much nicotine at once.

Wakefield went on to describe one case burned in her memory, which involved a young vaper who would throw up strawberry vomit, thanks to her flavoured vape.

She says she knew she had a problem when her vomit started tasting like vape, the psychologist said.

Strawberry-flavoured vomit, because she’d had so much vape. If you Google Vape burns, it’s not pretty.

According to the American Lung Association, nic-sick occurs when someone consumes more nicotine than they can tolerate, or in other words, accidentally overdoses on nicotine. Symptoms often include nausea or vomiting, extreme fatigue and an inability to control muscles. Symptoms can last up to four hours later and its recommended to go to a hospital if symptoms progress into seizures, respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, breathing difficulties or even coma.

Nic-sick is rare when smoking, but far more common when vaping

Previously, nic-sick or overdosing on nicotine wasnt a large threat other than to children, who can tolerate far less nicotine than an adult.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, around 50 to 60 milligrams of nicotine is classed as a deadly dose for a 150 lbs adult. When considering that a smoker absorbs around 1 milligram per cigarette, it doesnt seem much of a concern.

Vaping, however, has changed the game. Juul claims that one of its pods contains as much nicotine as a whole pack of cigarettes, though this may vary because without oversight there is nothing stopping Juul or any other manufacturer from increasing nicotine levels, reports the American Lung Association

With higher nicotine levels mixed with the ease of use and fun flavors, its far easier to finish one vape in a short period of time than it is to smoke a whole pack of cigarettes.

How to know when you’re addicted

During her appearance on the Its A Lot podcast, psychologist Wakefield detailed her major red flags when it comes to vaping.

The clues for me that I reckon are worrying, is when you start thinking about it when you dont want to think about it, she said.

You wake up in the morning and the first thing you think is, Where’s my vape? Or if you get, like, anxiety about wondering where I’m going to get my next one.
