New survey hints you’ll receive a very generic gift for Valentine’s Day this year
Valentine’s Day is only a week away, so love birds are wasting no time to find the perfect present for their significant other. Despite the endless ideas and options to choose from, a recent survey suggests you’re more than likely to receive a very generic gift. So don’t get your hopes up!
Just like last year, Americans are expected to spend billions on thoughtful presents for their loved ones in 2024. Although an evening out or jewelry will amount to the most spending, the majority of people in relationships resort to three very common gifts.

Expect very generic gifts this Valentine’s Day
A survey conducted by the National Retail Federation found that the top three Valentine’s Day gifts in 2024 are candy, greeting cards, and flowers.
Over 57% of consumers plan on spending their money on candies for their loved ones, and 40% of them think greeting cards make the perfect present for the occasion. So you may not want to pin your hopes on a trip abroad or surprise gift of incredible thoughtfulness.
The fourth most popular present includes an evening out, followed by jewelry, clothing, and gift cards.
Flowers are still in demand in comparison to other expensive presents as 39% of the people from the survey want to buy them for their significant others.
The fourth and fifth most popular Valentine’s Day gifts are significantly expensive; which explains why fewer consumers may choose them.
While the survey predicts about $6.4 billion and $4.9 billion spending on jewelry and an evening out respectively, flowers will contribute $2.6 billion, despite being among the top three popular presents to celebrate love.
Millenials expected to celebrate the most
The same study shows that millennials, between the ages of 25 and 34, are planning to celebrate Valentine’s Day more than any other age group.
Regardless of gifts bought by consumers, the average spending for 2024 is predicted to be $185.81, still $8 more than what people spent over the last five years.
Buyers are resorting to online shopping with about 40% of Valentine’s Day presents bought online, while the next popular destinations are department stores and discount stores.
