New ’emotion detecting’ technology is first step towards modern-day mood rings
A scientific team in South Korea has taken us one step further to the 90s madness of mood rings with the worlds very first wearable emotion-reading technology.
If you were alive in the 1990s, or around when they came back into fashion time and time again, then you will no doubt remember the iconic mood rings. Though completely unscientific and lacking substantial evidence of their viability, they had the world in a chokehold, asking, Is this sorcery?

The mood ring mask is here
Professor Jiyun Kim and his research team in the Department of Material Science and Engineering at UNIST created the technology in a move that could revolutionize numerous professions and industries.
The technology employs a personalized skin-integrated facial interface (PSiFI) system, essentially a self-powered transparent mask. Once on, it analyses verbal and non-verbal expression data and sends it over the wi-fi to be analyzed.

“Based on these technologies, we have developed a skin-integrated face interface (PSiFI) system that can be customized for individuals, Professor Kim said in a press release.
“With this developed system, it is possible to implement real-time emotion recognition with just a few learning steps and without complex measurement equipment, study author Jin Pyo Lee added. This opens up possibilities for portable emotion recognition devices and next-generation emotion-based digital platform services in the future.”
How do mood rings work?
Shocker, mood rings dont actually understand human emotions. They do, however, as thermochromic crystals, react to heat.In case youre currently rooting through decades of rubbish to find your old jewelry, heres a nifty list of mood ring color combinations.
As reported by Best Mood Rings, black means stressed, red means nervous, orange means confused, green means worried, light blue means peaceful, dark blue means relaxed, purple means romantic, and pink means very happy.
