Never vacuum broken glass as you may be making it worse, says home hack guru
Have you ever struggled to sweep up tiny pieces of broken glass? We have found an easy hack that’s safe and ensures the floor is glass-free.
Unlike other items, broken glasses are much harder to clean. If you think a vacuum cleaner can do the job, mind you, the shards can damage the appliance. However, a breakfast staple can save your day.

How to sweep up broken glasses with bread
This effective method is recommended by TikTok user daddybrown, who is popular for sharing brilliant hacks that are easily achievable.
Next time you break a glass accidentally or intentionally, grab a slice of bread or a bun – you’re good to go. Don’t forget to cover your hands with gloves, however.
The TikTok hack guy recommends sweeping up the big pieces first with a broom and then using bread to get the tiny pieces. You can press and hold the bread against the glass pieces for the latter to stick to its surface.
“The texture of the bread allows you to push it through the crevices and trap those tiny pieces of glass”, which wouldn’t come off the floor easily otherwise, he explains.
You can use any bread – sourdough bread, or burger buns – as long as it’s soft and moist to attract the glass pieces.
Household items to pick up tiny glass pieces
If you don’t have bread or bun readily available at home when a glass breaks, there are other ways to clean up the mess using household items.
Ryan’s all-glass, a Cincinnati-based company that provides services such as the installation of doors, mirrors, windows, and more, suggests using a couple of household items to sweep up broken glass, including bread, as suggested by daddybrown.
- Potatoes – The delicious vegetable can attract tiny glasses when slices of it are pressed flat down against the shards.
- Tape – Any adhesive tape is great for picking tiny glass pieces. Ensure the tape is wrapped around a gloved hand with the sticky side out.
- Damp paper towels – Glass pieces easily stick to the soft and moist damn paper towels. It’s an excellent choice to clean up a broken wine bottle as it absorbs the liquid while removing the shards.
