Narcissists use money to manipulate you in unimaginable ways, claims therapist

You don’t want to deal with narcissists or their money. They use every penny – whether it belongs to them or someone else – to their advantage without any remorse or guilt.

Money and manipulation go hand-in-hand in a narcissistic relationship. As with all their calculated tactics, narcissists use finances to control others in ways a normal human can’t imagine.

Narcissists use money to manipulate others

Narcissistic abuse recovery coach, Jill Wise, discusses in detail how a person with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) treats money – mostly to get their needs met.

In an intimate relationship with an abuser/victim dynamic, the narcissist always uses money to gain control over the person they are abusing. Often, they shower their romantic partners with expensive presents or take them on luxurious vacations after a terrible episode of narcissistic abuse.

The sudden display of affection or care in the form of fancy experiences or gifts conditions the victim to settle for “breadcrumbs”, which is just enough to keep them hooked to the narcissist.

The other common yet sad way narcissists use finances to manipulate people in their lives is by withholding all the money and making them beg for it.

This is often degrading for an adult victim because they have to depend on the toxic person in their life to sustain and the money doesn’t come without belittling and mean remarks that further chip away at their confidence.

Money is ‘self-validating’

Narcissists “love money” because they associate wealth with power and the status quo. They believe people will look up to them if they possess more money.

“All narcissists love money. They want money, they love spending money, they love the power they have because they have money,” the therapist says.

When a narcissist doesn’t have money, they will “take your money” because they are primarily focused on their image and worried about how others perceive it.
