Moms ‘hack’ to beat common cold slammed by TikTok users as wildly dangerous

One thing that makes the season of frosty weather and cozy sweaters less fun is the common cold. A TikTok mom recently shared her hack to help her kids beat the frustrating ailment. However, her hack is scaring users who warn about the dangerous consequences and side effects.

Most of us turn to cough drops, warm tea with cinnamon and honey, and more tricks to beat the common cold. However, no one thinks of candles as a means of beating the annoying illness. No one except a mom-fluencer on TikTok. Her trick involves a candle and a pack of Vicks VapoRub.

TikTok mom’s smart hack to beat common cold

Lena Boston, a TikTok influencer with close to 250K followers, is popular for her ‘mom hack’ videos. She calls them, “Things I wish I knew as a first-time mom.”

Her video, posted on December 10th, shows her treating her kid for the common cold. Her hack does not involve ingesting; it’s all about breathing. She takes a finger full of Vicks VapoRub and applies it on a candle. She applies the Vicks generously on the candle before lighting it and putting it on a table in the kids’ room.

The logic is that, when the candle is lit, the kids will smell soothing and healing Vicks in the air, which should help speed up their healing and recovery. However, many TikTokers quickly pointed out how this could be more dangerous than productive.

Mom hack is scaring users

Under Lena’s video, there are thousands of comments. Many are warning about the terrible consequences of this hack. Some suggested using a Vicks humidifier instead of candles.

“What about that string on the candle it can catch on fire,” said one user.

“Is Vicks not flammable? looks dangerous to me” another user rightly pointed out.

“As a candle maker, this is so dangerous,” a third user said.

“Just make sure you have insurance on your house or apartment,” a fourth person said.

“I would never put a lit candle in the nursery way too dangerous. Instead, buy a candle warmer that plugs in or Vicks humidifier,” a fifth person pointed out.
