Using pee to whiten her teeth

The mom, who goes by the name Lucy Aura online, has gained over 400,000 views in just two days with her unconventional hack for whitening teeth.

Its one that hasnt seemed to widely catch on just yet, but Aura has remained adamant of the apparent benefits.

Did you know that the ancient Romans used to brush their teeth with urine? she told the camera. They used it to whiten their teeth and the thing it, it actually works because urine contains ammonia, which is a powerful cleaning agent.

Aura also claimed that urine contains stem cells which might help heal the enamel and gums when used to brush teeth.

I actually havent done this before but I was thinking I don’t wanna really use the tap water cause Ive been drinking lots of beautiful filtered water and then I thought, why dont I just brush my teeth with my urine?,

Aura dipped her toothbrush into her urine and confidently brushed her teeth with it. She claimed it tasted like water.

Romans reportedly did clean with pee

It might not be for everyone, but the history books do report that Romans really did use urine to whiten their teeth

According to the Edmonton Journal, Romans would use human and animal urine as a mouthwash to get pearly whites. Often, it was mixed with goats milk.

Thanks to the ammonia in urine, it was a popular cleaning tool in Ancient Rome. In fact, they even had urine collectors, who would collect the urine of willing passersby on the streets and sell it to a fullonica, where they cleaned clothes.

Taking dental hygiene advice from Romans however, might not be suited for everyone. They also reportedly created toothpaste using ashes, head of hare and donkey teeth, mixed with extracts of mouse brain or hare. That recommendation is reported by the Edmonton Journal to have come from philosopher and commander Pliny the Elder.

‘Urine therapy’

Aura is part of a growing community of people that choose to loop their urine, drinking what they excrete in liquid form. Many claim it has copious health benefits, from vitamins to stem cells. Some believe it to have massively improved their health or even cured their symptoms of serious health conditions.

Medical experts however have frequently spoken out against the practise, claiming that it doesnt provide health benefits that cant be gained from food and drinks, but also that it carries potential harm.

Dr Andrew Thornber told the BBC that drinking pee can risk reintroducing waste products back into your system. The whole point of urinating is for the kidneys to filter the blood and it gets rid of any excess fluid and salts, as well as minerals, he told BBC Three. Urine in a healthy person is made up of about 95% water, but the other 5% is waste products the body is looking to expel – such as potassium and nitrogen – which, if you have too much in your body, can cause problems.

Another doctor told the BBC: When you drink urine, it will eventually come back out again and be much more concentrated, which could lead to gut problems. The kidneys will have to work hard to filter out all the excess again, putting strain on them.
