Military wife branded tone-deaf after complaining about lack of spousal perks

A military spouse has found herself in hot water with other wives after she complained about the lack of perks she received for marrying a man in the army.

If you thought TikTok was an app for Gen Z slang and cringe-worthy dance videos, then you would be right. However, it’s also a great app for learning about the lives of other people like the 87-year-old man whose biggest regret touch the internet. Though some videos are heartwarming, a viral example took a more direct route.

Military spouses should get perks

Last year, Taylor Caruso (@tay_tay_caruso) posted a lengthy TikTok about the lack of perks wives receive for marrying a man in the military.

In her video, Taylor claimed that the perks of being a military wife don’t “seem to exist”, though it’s not immediately clear what sort of perks she was looking for. To back up her story, Taylor recalled being refused service at Disney World when she tried to use her military spouse’s ID.

Of course, such a statement drew the attention of other military spouses.

One wife, known as Miami Cougar (@jesstheprequeldoesmiami) on TikTok, slammed Taylor while also claiming that such perspectives are very common in the military. She seemed to suggest that a lot of women hitch to a military man in the hopes of an easy and often lavish life.

“What kind of perks did you want from marrying someone in the military,” she asked. “Did you think on your wedding day he was going to hand you one of those big-ass coupon books?”

She TikToker also referred to Taylor as a Dependa, which is a dating term for a woman who marries a military member for an easy life.

After taking a few witty jabs at the new wife, Miami Cougar argued that Taylor was looking for credit for a job she had never done. She also predicted that Taylor would be “popping out some kids” pretty fast.

Taylor apologized for her statements

After immense pushback from military communities on social media, Taylor posted a sort of apology video which she has since deleted. The original video is also gone.

Claiming the video got blown out of proportion, she explained: “The intention of making that video was simply to demonstrate that I was super excited to use my military ID because it’s currently the only form of legal identification with my new last name on it.”

Taylor did somewhat acknowledge her poor choice of wording, though some social media users argued that she was simply trying to spin the narrative in a direction that suited her.

“Why does her last name matter though if they were trying to verify her age?” one person pointed out.
