Microsoft held a funeral for Apples iPhone in 2010 and it has not aged well

Microsoft staffers once held a mock funeral for Apples iPhone and, over a decade later, the internet still cant believe that it’s real.

While Apples iPhone products currently represent around 21% of all smartphones in use today, there was once a time when it seemed like Microsoft would be the one dominating the market. In fact, staff were so confident that they would bury the competition that they once held a funeral for the iPhone and its safe to say that it did not age well.

Microsoft staff once held a mock funeral for Apples iPhone

Back in September 2010, Microsoft employees were snapped holding a parade that included fake hearses and a mock funeral for Apples iPhone and even Blackberry.

Many of the staffers were dressed in fancy dress, with groups of Grim Reapers carrying cutouts of their competitions devices as bagpipe players provided a melancholic soundtrack to the procession.

Cars were even modified to look like hearses with banners that claimed their new Windows Phone 7 would bury the competition.

At the time, the internet was understandably confused as to whether this was genuine with Business Insider reaching out to Microsoft for a statement to clarify the whole mock funeral fiasco.

It turned out that the funeral was real and part of a parade that staffers enjoyed in celebration of the launch of the Windows Phone 7, with Microsoft stating that it was a great way for [our] teams that have worked overtime to create a kick-ass product blow off steam and have a little fun.

The parade included an impromptu marching band of Windows Phone team members, roller skaters, a unicycle, costumes, and a few home-made floats, including a hearse for competitors. It was all in good fun and no actual competitors were harmed in the course of the celebration.

The internet still cant believe that the mock funeral was real

Despite Microsoft staff holding this mock funeral almost 14 years ago, the story continues to pop up now and again on social media yet the internet still cant believe that this was real.

In the years since the parade, the Windows Phone 7 has proven to be a spectacular failure for Microsoft leading to many of the comments now reading along the lines of Welp, this didnt age well at all.

In fact, an image from the procession was recently shared by a popular Twitter account where it reached 7.3 million views and over 140,000 likes in less than 24 hours.

Some of the top replies included I remember that, too bad they dont try their products first, Im sure they fired the person that came up with this idea, And that aged like milk.

Its a similar sentiment over on Reddit with the top comment, This is the exact energy and determination I want to destroy my enemies with, only for another user to reply Well, I hope it works out for you better than it did for them…

While the photos show that the staffers obviously enjoyed their day out celebrating the launch, its safe to say that tech giants will be advising against holding such processions in the future.
