
Mediterranean diet can reduce acne and improve overall skin health, shows study
No amount of skincare products can treat your acne if you aren’t eating right. A new study shows that a lack of essential nutrients could be the reason for your breakouts.

Scientists find diet that helped reduce acne
The paper published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology reports a 16-week study on tweens – individuals aged 12 years and older – to understand the impact of diet on acne.
They made the participants eat a Mediterranean diet during the trial to determine if it impacted their skin health. By the end of the study, the scientists learned that the nutritious diet contributed to better skin.
The study states: “Acne severity improved significantly over the course of the study, with a reduction in the absolute number of noninflammatory and inflammatory lesions.”

They also found that acne patients were deficient in Omega-3 fatty acids. Throughout the study, they took oral supplements of algae-derived DHA/EPA with the plant-focused Mediterranean diet.
For the unversed, the Mediterranean diet encourages plant-based foods and healthy fats including omega-3 fatty acids. If you’re following the said diet, you will be eating many vegetables, fruits, beans, whole grains, extra virgin oil, and a lot of fish.
Omega-3 fatty acids are great for your brain
In addition to better-looking skin, healthy fat boosts your brain health. Although a balanced diet with the right amount of macronutrients and micronutrients is important for the overall development of the brain, Omega-3 fatty acids are believed to be especially beneficial for the organ.
