Meaning of ‘Trad Wife’ on TikTok
Trad Wife is short for ‘Traditional Wife’ and describes a conventional female homemaker.
It’s a woman whose marital role is being a full-time housewife – doing the cooking, cleaning and looking after the children.
Her main occupation is caring for her family, managing household affairs, and doinghousework while her husband goes to work.
“Used in alt-right circles to refer to women that embody traditionally feminine andwifelyqualities,” a description on Urban Dictionary says.
These qualities are things like “submissiveness, chastity and willingness to do household chores”.
Term goes viral after Reddit post
A viral Reddit post called “TikTok ruined my marriage” has got everyone using the term Trad Wife this week.
In the now-deleted story, a distraught wife explained that the social media app completely changed her husbands character.
The 37-year-old claimed they were really happy together until he became obsessed with TikTok’s “tradwife” videos.
He stumbled upon the clips earlier this year and became obsessed, causing the end of their 12-year marriage.
‘Trad Wife’ videos take over TikTok
The type of TikTok videos she was talking about see women glamorising their lives as housewives in modern-day society.
In one clip, a woman explains how to be a Trad Wife, telling people to implement “traditional gender roles”.
This is a step back to the 1900s, when there were strict marital roles and women were expected to stay home while their partner worked.
She also tells women to marry a “masculine” and “protective” man and learn how to cook and clean properly.
Another shows a woman getting ready as a Trad Wife, putting on an old-fashioned white dress with blue flowers on it.
